Geoffrey has founded and managed the legal function for two companies, serving as Chief Counsel and General Counsel. He has direct experience implementing a company's strategic and tactical legal initiatives, has served as frontline negotiator on key deals, advised senior management on company strategies, handled intellectual property, licensing, and a variety of other commercial transactions, and resolved employment matters and other disputes. He also has managed corporate legal work from Board matters to financings, revenue recognition to purchasing, policy issues to operations, acquisitions, merger integrations, and the like. In his early career, he served for nearly a decade as a litigator in private practice, representing clients in trade secrets litigation, employment disputes, products liability law, and consumer law, among other matters
Geoffrey particularly enjoys communicating legal issues to business personnel, and in preventing and resolving disputes, and takes pride in the number of business colleagues who have expressed appreciation for the legal services he provides - particularly those who initially approached lawyers with reservations.
Prior to his work with The Schinner Law Group, Geoffrey first practiced with a boutique litigation firm in San Francisco, later joining McCutchen Doyle Brown & Enersen (now Bingham McCutchen), where his practice focused on trade secrets. He moved into transactional work at Sun Microsystems, then was sought out by a former Sun finance executive who asked Geoffrey to establish the first legal department for Softbank Forums; subsequently, he and the company survived four name changes, three CEOs, two mergers, and a spinoff. He then joined Global IP Sound, a Voice over IP startup with offices in Stockholm and San Francisco, where he again founded and established the legal function. In 2003 he segued to private consulting as "General Counsel Services" for Global IP Sound and other clients, and in 2004, to expand the range of services he could offer to his clients, he allied his practice with The Schinner Law Group.
Geoffrey lives with his spouse, son, and daughter in a geodesic dome house in Richmond, California.
